Why a short video call before a first date is worth it

A quick video call before meeting is the cheapest safety check there is, and it is also the best way to find out whether you actually want to spend an evening with someone. It takes five minutes and saves a lot of wasted Saturdays.

What five minutes on video tells you

Messages are edited. A call is not. In a few minutes you find out things no amount of texting will settle:

  • That they are the person in the photos.
  • How they actually talk - pace, humour, whether they listen.
  • Whether there is any spark at all, which is the thing a first date is really for.
  • Whether they are comfortable being seen, which is its own signal.

How to suggest it without it sounding like a test

Make it about saving both of you time, not about checking up on them. Something like: 'Before we pick a place, fancy a quick video call this week? Ten minutes, just to say hello properly.'

Keep it short and give it an end point. A call with no end in sight is a bigger ask than a coffee. A call that is 'ten minutes before dinner' is easy to say yes to.

Making the call easy

You do not need to prepare questions. Ask what they are up to this week, pick something from their profile, and let it run. If it is awkward, that is normal - most people are a little stiff on camera. You are not judging a performance, you are checking that a real, reasonable person is on the other end.

Use whatever is easiest, and you do not need to share your phone number to do it. Many platforms have built-in calling; if not, a one-off meeting link works.

If they keep saying no

Once is fine - people are busy, shy, or caught at a bad moment. But a pattern of reasons, week after week, while the messages stay warm, is one of the most reliable warning signs in online dating. Genuine people who are interested in meeting you will manage five minutes on camera.

You do not owe anyone a meeting who will not show you their face first. Saying 'I only meet people after a quick call' is a complete, reasonable boundary.

On 6on7, every match has a private meeting-readiness card, and "you have seen them on a live video call" is one of its steps. Photo checks on profiles help too - but a confirmed photo proves who someone is, not how they treat people, so the call is still worth making.
